Rating the country’s best places to live is a bit like sampling the buffet at your favorite Chinese restaurant-- with so many options to choose from, what ends up on the plate becomes a simple matter of individual taste. For instance, while some may consider the job market as priority one, others might place greater emphasis on the local crime rate, quality of education or size of community.
Yet despite these variables, there do exist several organizations, publications and intrepid individuals who, year-after-year, make a determined effort to rate America’s cities and towns in a variety of categories-- from business climate to quality of life. While these rankings are highly subjective, usually shuffling from year to year, there does appear to be some consensus among the nation’s so-called “experts.”
To avoid incurring the wrath of every snubbed chamber of commerce from Portland, Maine to Portland, Oregon, we’ve utilized the data from several of these studies to compile three of our own “America’s Best” lists:
